The beauty about the InReach SE is that you can receive weather forecasts when out of phone range. I used it on a solo expedition in East Greenland, where phone range is very localised and it was brilliant. But if you do have access to phone signal most of the time there isn't much point I guess. I also used the Hahnel charger to charge my D7000 batteries and it is a good charger (it will also charge AA's, AAA's and the battery from my Nikon AW1 and just about any other battery.

Mark, don't look forward to the spot connect review... It isn't good, ill leave it at that for now. Geoff, I hadn't seen that charger before, it looks interesting. Honestly, I used the SPOT connect because I got it for free, all I had to do was pay for the service. I would consider the in reach, but honestly, I think I just want a standalone PLB. I don't want the messaging stuff... BUT, that is another blog post, thanks for the recommendation.

and instead of the SPOT Connect, consider the DeLorme InReach. Far superior with 2 way messaging via Iridium http://www.inreachdelorme.com/

Thanks for the Goal Zero & Nomad 13 review. Our upcoming 11 day trip is going to be a test of power conservation so I think I might be looking for options when I get back.

I'm looking forward to your SPOT Connect review as I use the Generation Two SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger and love it. Like you I want to know what the tides are doing. I have found the AyeTides XL app for my iPad is awesome even without internet connectivity. The only thing I need to do is make sure the reference locations that I will be using are downloaded into the iPad before heading out as there is zero cell service where we are going.
